After the Amerada Petroleum Corporation was created in the early 1900s, British oil entrepreneur Lord Cowdray formed a subsidiary named the Amerada Corporation in 1919 to explore oil in North America. The petroleum corporation struggled through the Great Depression but afterwards, became profitable again.
In 1941, it reorganized and merged the Amerada Corporation with the Amerada Petroleum Corporation and kept the latter name. In 1966, Hess Oil and Chemical purchased 10% of the company and the two corporations merged in 1968 to form Amerada Hess and created a Hess gas card for its customers to use.
In 2001, the company acquired Triton Energy Limited (one of the largest independent exploration and production companies in the U.S.). In 2006, Amerada Hess changed its name to Hess Corporation and today, the company has plans to focus exclusively on oil production.
