Exxon can trace its roots back to the Standard Oil Company started by John D. Rockefeller back in 1870. The Standard Oil Company became the world’s largest oil refiner, but was forced to split into 33 smaller companies in 1911 under the Sherman Antitrust Act. One of the smaller companies was named Jersey Standard.
In 1959, Jersey Standard gained control of Humble Oil and divided it into three brands – Esso, Enco, and Humble. In 1973, all three divisions were rebranded under the name “Exxon” and the company changed its name to Exxon Corporation. The original chosen name was actually “Exon” but after the company learned that the governor of Nebraska’s name was James Exon, a second “x” was added.
Exxon merged with Mobil in 1999 to form ExxonMobil, and while there’s still an Exxon gas card available, it’s considered an ExxonMobil gas card.
