Since 2006, the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) has awarded their “Top Safety Pick” rating to vehicles that have gone above the normal standards of safety. Their rating is based on “crashworthiness – how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash” and “crash avoidance and mitigation – technology that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity.”
