It’s Halloween and you never know what could pop out at any moment – from trick-or-treaters to party-goers, it’s important to stay alert. If you’ll be driving around during the festivities, keep these safety tips in mind from our fleet fuel card experts:
** Drive slowly, especially when driving through neighborhoods. Reduce your speed significantly to avoid any accidents with pedestrians or other cars.
** Be extra alert during dusk hours and right after sunset, when trick-or-treaters are most likely to be out. To be safe, stay alert between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. and make sure your headlights are on.
** If driving through a neighborhood, watch for children crossing through parked cars.
** Be wary of fallen leaves on the streets. These can alter your normal braking distance and can be especially slippery when wet.
** Avoid any distractions such as your cellphone, eating, drinking, and any other activity. Also, turn down any music that you’re playing when you’re in an area with lots of pedestrians. You’ll be able to pay better attention to what’s going on around you.
** Yield to any and all pedestrians, especially children who may not know how to cross the street. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
** Don’t pass other vehicles that have stopped on the road – they could be letting out children.
** Be patient. Halloween activities can cause traffic jams and can slow you down overall. Plan to arrive at your destination later than usual.
